HGR was established as a turf-runway airfield in 1928 and has developed over the years into a viable airport facility and employment generator. The key events are outlined below:
|
 |
- 1928: Kreider-Reisner Aircraft Company established a turf runway airfield.
- 1929: Fairchild Aviation Corporation purchased Kreider-Reisner.
- 1933: City of Hagerstown purchased Airport from Fairchild.
- 1936: Two paved runways were constructed. They included Runway 2-20 (2,400 feet long) and Runway 8-26 (2,420 feet long).
- 1942/1946/1952/1958/1977: Both runways were extended, and taxiways were constructed in 1942. In 1958, Runway 8-26 was re-designated as 9-27 and was reconstructed, lighted, and extended to its current length of 5,461 feet. This was the first time that additional land was acquired to accommodate Airport improvements including a realignment of US 11 to the east around the end of the extended runway.
- The Air Traffic Control Tower was constructed and activated in 1973.
- 1981: Washington County purchased Airport from City of Hagerstown.
- 1991: The new terminal building on Showalter Road was commissioned.
